How is the runner cost worked out?
What the Spitfire license covers. All of the software, and the right to use runners within the plan's limits: 1 runner per run on Free, 10 on Growth, 30 on Scale, unlimited on Enterprise. The license is a one-time payment or a monthly subscription without commitment; there is no usage-based Spitfire fee (per VU or per run hour).
What running the runners costs. Runners run on your servers or in your cloud account. You pay for those machines to your cloud provider or your own data centre, not to Spitfire; on a server that is already running they may cost nothing extra. So that the total is realistic, we add this estimate to the Spitfire cost.
How the calculator estimates it. It counts one runner per 1,000 VUs (⌈VUs / 1,000⌉) and multiplies by the test length (hours), the runs a month and the runner VM cost an hour you enter above (default $0.10). The result is in USD, converted to TRY at the rate you enter.
Math: VU hours = VUs × test length (hours) × runs a month. Spitfire runner cost = ⌈VUs / 1,000⌉ runners × hours × runs × runner VM cost an hour. The Spitfire edition is the cheapest whose limits fit (Free: 1 user, 100 VUs, 15 min; Growth: 5 users, 2,000 VUs, 4 h; Scale: 15 users, 10,000 VUs, 8 h; Enterprise: unlimited). The Spitfire yearly license is a one-time payment: the monthly amount is a twelfth of the yearly plan (rounded to whole lira); Growth and Scale are also sold as a monthly subscription without commitment; Enterprise is sold by quote, so it gets no total. Yearly total: the yearly plan's amount or twelve subscription months, plus twelve months of runner VMs; the one-time month is for a single testing period, so it gets no yearly total. The requests/s limit is not considered.
Compared with usage-based pricing. With cloud-based tools priced by usage (VU hours, test time, metric volume), the cost grows with use: more VUs, longer tests or more frequent runs make the bill bigger. With Spitfire the license price is fixed; the only part that changes with use is the cost of the runners on your own servers.
